One Dim Sum@Hong Kong-Low Price but highly rated

It was a very cold December when I visited Hong Kong last year. After spending a full day of shopping in Mongkok, I felt like having some hot tea to warm up a bit. How about going for some Yum Cha? There were a number of restaurants still open and serving Yum Cha till very late at night.

I remember reading about a One Michelin Starred restaurant called One Dim Sum in Mongkok in the Michelin Restaurant Guide, so I decided to give that a try. I was very excited as it this was the going to be the first Michelin starred restaurant I had been to.

Outside the restaurant, there were chairs for customers that waiting for their seats or takeaway. I guess this place get very busy during normal the day but luckily for me, I visit and only had to wait for about 5 minutes for a seat. It was shorter than what I expected.

When I went inside, I was a little surprised. I had imagined the decor to be  fancy and luxurious, being a Michelin starred restaurant but in reality, the decor here was clean and simple. It gave the restaurant an impression that it was going to serve you economical, simple and delicious food.

I was seated in the corner of the restaurant near the kitchen doors, which allowed me to see and smell all freshly steamed Dim Sum being served by the waiters. I was starving! I had to order some for myself!

I looked at the menu on my table, but there was just so much to choose from and I didn’t know where to start. I quickly picked some of my favourites and passed my order on to the waiter.

After about 10 minutes my Dim Sums arrived, all steaming hot. I bet this place starts to cook most of their Dim Sum after you order it to make sure they stay hot and fresh when it’s served to customers.

The Dim sums were very traditional and some even tasted rather ‘old school’. The taste reminded me of the times when I was a kid and went to Yum Cha with my grandparents early in the cold, winter morning. It was always nice to have a hot tea and Dim Sum in cold weather.

I had a very memorable meal at One Dim Sum. The food was very nice and I felt great with my first Michelin experiences. This is a outstanding One Starred restaurant and I will definitely visit again next time I’ in Hong Kong.

One Dim Sum – the restaurant can only accommodate around 40 people. There will be an hour wait in peak hours but it’s worth the wait.

MENU: Each dish of dim sum is priced around HK$10 – $20 (AUD $1.5-$3).  Ordering around HK$50 (AUD $7) per person will be plenty, which is why One Dim Sum is one of the cheapest Michelin Starred Restaurant in the world.

Dim Sum Record Card – How to order? Write down the quantity next to the dishes that you want and hand it to waiter.

Steamed Pork Dumplings (Siu Mai) one of the most classic dish in Yum Cha.

Prawn Dumplings (Har Gow). One of my favourite dim sum. The wrapping is thin and not sticky. Inside, the prawn is fresh and sweet. Delicious!!

Barbecued Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao).  Tasty Barbecued Pork with Soft Bun. The filling is rich of Barbecued Sauce. RECOMMENDED!

Steamed chicken with Four Treasures – Four Treasures included Chinese Ham, Mushroom, Chicken and sponge-like fish maw. Fish maw and the wrapping are my favourite part of this dish.

Fried Dumplings with salted meat – Crispy and thin wrapping.

Desserts:

Fried Egg sticks –  served with a combination of condensed milk or maple syrup.  Crispy and rich, strong taste of fresh eggs. ‘Old School’ flavour. RECOMMENDED.

Steamed cake with water chestnut – the water chestnuts are crunchy.

Tips:

1. Go there early. Some of the more popular dishes may be sold out, such as Baked Barbecued Pork Buns and Chinese Steam Cakes.

2. Normally theres a 15-30 minutes for seats and sometimes even longer. No reservations.

3. Cash only.

Recommend: Prawn Dumplings, Barbecued Port Bun, Fried Egg Sticks, Chinese Steam cake
